Социальное пространство мачигенга делится на кровных родственников и дальних родственников. Нормой считается
экзогамия
. Мужчина мачигенга может взять жену только из дальних родственников. Запрещён брак с жителями посёлков, члены которых вступали в брак с братьями или родителями.
У большинства мачигенга отсутствуют личные имена. Члены одного племени обращаются друг к другу как по родственному отношению («брат», «сестра», «отец» и т. п.), а представителей других племён называют по их испанским именам.
