Родился 15 ноября 1932 года в Анн-Арборе штата Мичиган в семье голландских эмигрантов кальвинистского исповедания .

В 1955 году получил степень магистра гуманитарных наук в Мичиганском университете .

В 1958 году получил степень доктора философии в Йельском университете .
