    Azeri Turks

The Azeris still regard Azerbeijan as their original homeland and call themselves either Karabaglilar or Sirvanlilar. Most live in the eastern provinces of Anatolia which are close to Azerbeijan and Armenia. Their communities are concentrated mainly in the Igdir district of Kars, in the Taşliçay district of Ağri, in the Şenkaya district of Erzurum and in the Başkale and Muradiye districts of Van. The large majority of Azeris living in the Kars province were transferred there following the 1918-1925 population exchanges with former Soviet Armenia. The Azeris who settled in the Van province immigrated from Iranian Azerbeijan some four generations ago while some of the Azeris who emigrated from the Kazak district of Azerbeijan after 1938 and 1945 were settled in Amasya and in the district of Emirdag in Afyon (andrews 1989:73-77).
