Жак Ма́ртин Барзе́н ( фр. Jacques Martin Barzun , 30 ноября 1907 года, Франция — 25 октября 2012 года, США ) — американский историк культуры , публицист, педагог. Эмерит-профессор Колумбийского университета , в котором был отмечен Great Teacher Award (2007) . Автор множества книг.

Биография

Родился в Кретейе близ Парижа . С 1920 года в США, куда переехал с матерью, и где его отец находился с 1917 года с дипломатической миссией.

Окончил Колумбийский университет (бакалавр и магистр искусств). Степень доктора философии получил там же в 1932 году, защитив диссертацию о Монтескье, которая легла в основу его первой книги, опубликованной в том же году. С 1928 г. преподавал историю в альма-матер, с 1937 г. профессор, был деканом и проректором, с 1975 г. в отставке, эмерит . В 1996 г. переехал из Нью-Йорка в Сан-Антонио, Техас, где и умер.

С 1933 года гражданин США. Впервые женился в 1931 году и развёлся в 1936 году. В том же году женился второй раз, от этого брака трое детей, с 1979 года вдовец. В 1980 году женился третий раз.

Итоговый труд Жака Барзена — внушительная книга «От рассвета до упадка: 500 лет культурной истории Запада» (От рассвета к декадансу: 500 лет западной культурной жизни, от 1500 г. по настоящее время ) (2000), которую он выпустил, когда ему было 92 года. Как передаёт Б. Парамонов , надлом Запада, приведший к нынешнему упадку, декадансу, Барзен обозначает 1914 годом — годом начала Первой мировой войны, которая, по его словам развеяла «Великую Иллюзию» — западный миф о поступательном культурном прогрессе .
